Stay Cool This Summer: What a Rented Air Conditioner Gets You
When summer really turns up the heat, a fan often isn't enough anymore. An air conditioner creates real comfort—without the high cost of buying one outright. With Grover, you rent your climate device for exactly as long as you need it, and pair it with other smart home devices if you like. Flexible, straightforward, and with no long-term commitment.
- Always up-to-date tech: You get access to new, energy-efficient models without worrying about outdated devices.
- No high upfront costs: Buying a powerful air conditioner can cost several hundred euros. With Grover, you pay a small monthly amount instead.
- Grover Care included: Repair costs for damage are partially covered through Grover Care, depending on your plan.
- Circular economy, not a throwaway product: Your device gets reused responsibly after your rental ends instead of thrown away—reducing e-waste.
- Delivery and returns made easy: Your device ships straight to your door. Once your rental ends, you send it back for free.
- Full price transparency: No hidden fees—you always see exactly what you're paying.
How to Find the Right Climate Device
Not every air conditioner fits every room. These factors can help you choose:
- Room size: Small rooms do fine with a compact model. For larger spaces, more cooling power (BTU) pays off—better to have a bit more than too little, so the device doesn't have to run at full blast constantly.
- Noise level: For bedrooms or home offices, a low decibel rating matters.
- Energy efficiency: Efficient devices cool just as well while saving on your electricity bill and the environment.
- Extra features: Dehumidifying, timers, or app control make everyday use more convenient.
These Climate Devices Are Available to Rent at Grover
- Dyson: Combines air purification with cooling or heating—from pure air-purifying fans to models with a heating function, without classic air-conditioner technology.
- Rowenta: The Rowenta Turbo Cool+ is a classic portable air conditioner for noticeably cooler rooms.
More Than Just Cold Air: Climate Devices with Air Purification
Many climate devices at Grover combine cooling with air purification—handy for allergy sufferers and families with kids.
- HEPA and activated carbon filters: Filter pollutants out of the air.
- Dehumidifying: Helps prevent mold growth.
- Ionization: Freshens the air further and has antibacterial effects.
- Smart home control: Operate your device easily from your phone.
Frequently Asked Questions About Renting an Air Conditioner
Who should consider renting an air conditioner?
Anyone who wants to stay flexible—whether you're renting your home, working from home, or have a family. You skip the high upfront cost and aren't tied to a device you might only need for a few months a year.
How much cooling power do I need?
- Small rooms (up to 25 m²): 8,000–9,000 BTU
- Medium rooms (25–35 m²): 10,000–12,000 BTU
- Large rooms: over 13,000 BTU
How long can I rent an air conditioner?
Choose your rental term flexibly: 6, 12, 18, or 24 months. The longer you commit, the lower your monthly price.
How much electricity does a portable air conditioner use?
Most portable home devices draw between 700 and 1,500 watts, or roughly 0.7 to 1.5 kWh per hour of operation. Running the device for four to ten hours on a hot day usually keeps costs manageable.
Do I need my landlord's permission?
Usually not. A portable air conditioner with an exhaust hose run through a slightly opened window counts as normal use of your home. You only need your landlord's approval for structural changes—such as drilling holes in the window frame or installing a permanent split-system air conditioner.
Is an air conditioner bad for the environment?
Mainly when something goes wrong. Refrigerant circulates in a closed loop between the compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator, and isn't consumed in the process—much like in a refrigerator. The high global warming potential of HFC refrigerants like R134a (about 1,430 times that of CO2 over 100 years, according to the IPCC) only becomes a real problem once the gas actually escapes into the atmosphere: through a leak, improper repair, or incorrect disposal at the end of its life. Under normal, intact operation, the refrigerant stays sealed inside the system.
Beyond the refrigerant, energy use is the second factor: the more power a device draws, the higher its CO2 output during operation. What you can control: choose an energy-efficient device, run it only when you need it, and return it properly at the end of use instead of throwing it away. With Grover, we handle exactly that—your device gets reused responsibly after your rental instead of being scrapped.
Can an air conditioner make you sick?
Not directly—colds are caused by viruses, not cold air itself. What's real, though: a study published in PNAS shows that dry air weakens the mucosal barrier in your airways and measurably impairs your body's natural defense against flu viruses. A direct, cold airflow on your body can also contribute to tense muscles, a stiff neck, or headaches.
The best way to prevent this is proper positioning: point the airflow away from yourself, your bed, or your desk, and toward the ceiling or the opposite wall instead. Cold air is denser than warm air and naturally sinks—directing it upward or against a wall first lets it spread and mix evenly through the room before it reaches you. That avoids the concentrated draft responsible for tense muscles and dried-out mucous membranes. Also leave 30 to 50 cm of space between the device and walls or furniture so air can circulate freely.
A rarer but more serious risk is Legionella. A CDC study of 196 cooling towers in the US found live Legionella bacteria in 79 of them—but this mainly affects large, stationary cooling systems with standing water, not the portable consumer devices you'd rent from Grover. What matters most is filter maintenance: dirty filters can blow dust, mold spores, or bacteria into the air.
Our tip: Keep the temperature no more than 6°C below the outdoor temperature, point the airflow at the ceiling or a wall instead of yourself, and clean the filters regularly.
